How Birthday Discovery Works
Magic Mailer can automatically find birthday information for your contacts — so you don't have to ask each person when their birthday is.
How It Works
We use multiple independent data providers to search for birthday data. The process runs in passes:
- Pass 1 — We search the first data provider for all contacts missing a birthday. Any matches are saved immediately.
- Pass 2 — Contacts that were not found in the first pass are sent to a second, independent data provider for another search.
- Pass 3 — Any remaining contacts without a birthday are searched through a third provider for maximum coverage.
Each provider has access to different data sources, so running multiple passes significantly increases the chance of finding a birthday.
What's Included with Your Subscription?
- Passes 1 and 2 are included with your subscription for contacts within your plan's limits.
- Pass 3 availability depends on your subscription tier — higher tiers include more comprehensive enrichment.
- Each tier includes a set number of Birthday Finder credits per billing period. These credits determine how many contacts can be enriched.
Important Things to Know
- 100% coverage is not guaranteed. Some contacts simply don't have birthday data available in any public or commercial database.
- Existing birthdays are preserved. If a contact already has a birthday in your CSV upload, it is not overwritten by the discovery process.
- You can always add birthdays manually. Edit any contact to add or correct their birthday.
- Discovery is intended for contacts you plan to send cards to. Enrichment limits are in place per subscription tier and billing period to prevent misuse.
How Do I Enable Birthday Discovery?
Birthday discovery runs automatically when you upload contacts through the Send wizard (for subscribers). You don't need to do anything extra — the system handles it in the background after your upload.
If you uploaded contacts before subscribing, you'll see a banner on the Contacts page offering to process them. Click "Process All" to run address validation and birthday discovery.
